One Last Edit of Delving Deeper RPG

Copyright Mark Allen
As the proofing suggestions for the first booklet came in, it became clear to the Delving Deeper RPG Development Team that the entire text of the game needed one more, complete edit. To do this, we have added a new team member – Simon Bull (“Waysoftheearth”) who shares our love for Original Edition and has excellent editing skills. Having a fresh set of eyes and another heart for Original Edition on board at the very end of this project is exactly what Delving Deeper RPG needs.

Simon's edit is already in progress and we really like the results we are seeing! The language of the text is being perfected, excess descriptions and commentary are being removed and few mechanics are being tweaked to be even more reminiscent of the earliest version of Original Edition.

Most of us have purchased rpg products in the past where one last, solid edit would have made a great deal of difference. Who likes to buy a print product only to see an up-dated version released a week or even a month later? I know that really bothers me and I am sure it does most gamers as well. As a publisher, I know that no product is ever perfect and you can spend an eternity trying to get it that way. At some point, you do have to release a product or it is essentially vaporware. Those of you who went through the “box ordeal” with me a few years ago know that I can be trusted to deliver this game very soon.

Personally, Delving Deeper RPG has become a sacrifice of love for me. I have continued to fund the development even during the last seven months of my unemployment. When decisions had to be made about the game, every choice I have made has been for the long haul – even if it meant spending the precious few dollars I was earning from rpgs sales. In other words, I have not cut any corners nor tried to push the product out-the-door before it was ready. Seeing this game completed, released and shipped will be a milestone in my life. Believe me, know one wants to see Delving Deeper RPG finished more than me!

Please stay with us just a bit longer. For everyone who has (or will) order a Delving Deeper Boxed Set, I am adding (in addition, to the many booklets already part of the Delving Deeper Boxed Set) the first three Delving Deeper adventure modules. Plus, I am also going to send a free pdf (with art) of the game with every purchase until in ships.

Thank you. :)

  1. ....it burns! It hurts us, precious! :-)

We'll survive, bro. We're so looking forward to the finished product. You're going historical! (not hysterical, but maybe that too)

  2. ...oh, and I want to run demo games here in Central PA. Any way that will be possible with physical product to offer others?

  3. John! No problem man! We can wait as I'm sure we all share your dislike for poorly edited material. Thanks, by the way, for adding in the adventures! What an added bonus!

  4. @Sean Michael Kelly: Yes, we will have printed products to share with other folks soon after the boxed set ships. I am still working on what those will look like, but I believe a quickstart booklet may come into being as well.

  7. I can't say I'm not disappointed, but better to be disappointed at a delay than the product. Besides, I love how with each delay I am promised more and more stuff :).

So, don't ship it until it's done!

  8. Provided this is the last delay all is good, three adventures for another week or so is tolerable. But at some point you do have to send it out to the world and deal with the consequences.

Plus I'd hate to see your ability to put out other products crippled by the expense of continuing to develop this one.

  9. "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life." Proverbs 13:1-13

John much appreciate the extra effort to make this product go up to "11." I'm glad you're taking the time to make this a signature product. So thank you for the extra effort to make this a "Tree of Life."

  12. Just ordered mine about a minute ago. A fair and affordable price for all the goodies included in the box. Thank, Mr. Halfling, for providing us with a trim, up-to-date product that will emulate the grandpapa of a game we all know and love.

And the inclusion of those three modules will make the game easier to get into for newbies like myself.

    Thank you and merry Christmas.

  13. Quick question. When you say early 2012, we talking Jan, Feb, or later? Thinking of starting up a new game, and if I just have to wait a few weeks, I will hold off and use DD.

    2. Missed this, Matt.

The Team will not let me set any dates, but the editting is going very well and quicker than I thought it would. Simon is doing a high-quality job on the editing. It lookslike any proofing after that will go very quickly. After that, all have to do is add this final text to the booklet layouts I already have on hand. And since I create the booklets myself, they should start shipping very soon after that. However, as soon as the booklets are ready, I will send out the free pdfs of the booklets.

  14. Yes! I agree wholeheartedly with Matt Jackson. What does "early 2012" mean? And, may I kindly suggest that we should also be given updates every so often on its progress. Especially for those of us who have paid for this product already.

  17. Blog entry for Wednesday, November 23, 2011:

". . . we have delayed shipping the boxed sets to December 9. This is the final shipping date and we will hit it."

    44 days and counting . . .

    1. @ Anonymous: You have every right to be upset. Quoting the date I posted on November 23 is exactly why the development team will not let me set any more dates.

This last edit is really making the difference in Delving Deeper. It is a far better quality product that if we would have just printed and shipped it in December and I know folks are going to be pleased with it.

While I know most folk's are anxious to get their boxed set, I am very stressed over all the delays. No one wants this game shipped more than me.

Of course, if I had it all over to do again, instead of taking pre-orders, I would use Kickstarter once the text was ready to fund the box and booklet print run. I am quite sure I will never take pre-orders again.
